About Jane West
Executive Director, Florida Defenders of the Environment
Jane West is the Executive Director of Florida Defenders of the Environment (FDE), a Gainesville-based conservation organization founded in 1969 dedicated to protecting and restoring Florida's natural resources. She is an environmental and land use attorney with more than 25 years of experience in law, government, and nonprofit leadership. Before joining FDE, she served as the first in-house counsel for the City of Palatka and, prior to that, as Policy & Planning Director, lead lobbyist, and general counsel for 1000 Friends of Florida, where she led legislative strategy and coalition building on smart growth and conservation issues. Earlier in her career, she litigated precedent-setting environmental and land use cases in state and federal courts, including as founding partner of Collins & West, P.A. and staff attorney for the Conservation Law Foundation. She is an AV-rated attorney admitted to practice in Florida and Maine, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court. Jane was raised in Athens, Greece and Budapest, Hungary before moving to Florida as a teenager.
